Oklahoma traffic stop nets $1M heroin bust

By Michael Kimball
Published: September 10, 2008
A California man was arrested Monday after drug agents found about $1 million worth of heroin in his car,
officials from the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control reported.
Luis Machuca, 33, of Sunland, Calif., was arrested on a drug trafficking complaint and booked into
the Canadian County jail, bureau spokesman Mark Woodward said. Bail was set at $25,000.
How drugs were found-An agent stopped Machuca's car in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40
west of El Reno, Woodward said. Machuca consented to a search, and the agent found about
10 pounds of heroin inside the car's battery compartment, Woodward said. Agents sometimes make
traffic stops on I-40 looking for drugs, Woodward said. Agents generally issue warnings to drivers not
found to be smuggling drugs. The agent who arrested Machuca did not have a tip or other information
indicating drugs were in the car before the stop, Woodward said.
The heroin seizure is one of the largest in
state history, Woodward said.

According to documents filed in LeFlore County District Court, an undercover OBN agent purchased 1.0 grams of methampetamines from Dustin Carl Bell on Nov. 28, 2006, at a cost of $100. The document states that the transaction took place outside of Bell's residence located at 205 LeFlore in Poteau.

These arrests follow the recent marijuana eradication operation conducted in the county during the last week in June by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics.
According to OBN Agent Howard Peters, 14 agents eradicated approximately $141,000 worth of marijuana during the annual operation.
“We’ve been doing this for about 25 years,” Peters said. “In addition to the ground teams and the command post we are using helicopters with aerial spotters in places that are unaccessible for our ground teams. Then we use an aerial sprayer component on the chopper to destroy the marijuana from the air.”
During the week-long operation 31 marijuana plots were eradicated and 732 plants were destroyed.
“We found 234 plants in a place near Bokoshe,” Peters said. “We also made one arrest and seized two firearms.”

Marijuana seizure near Sharon

Almost 400 marijuana plants were seized from a property near Sharon during a search conducted by
officials with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drug Control late Friday afternoon.
After receiving several tips that the resident at that property had been growing the plants,
OBN officials flew over the property to visually confirm the presence of the plants, according to
Wendell Brandenburg, agent in charge for the OBN's Woodward district. The OBN officials then
obtained a search warrant, which they executed around 5:30 p.m. Friday, he said.
The search resulted in the discovery and confiscation of 391 cultivated marijuana plants and
approximately a pound of processed marijuana, Brandenburg said. ''If this was all on the street,
it would be worth quite a bit of money," he said, noting that it is estimated that one marijuana plant
can produce one to two pounds of processed marijuana, which sells for around $800 per pound.
A number of other items were also confiscated during the search, which in addition to a search of the
grounds themselves included a search of a home on the property, of a white building on the property
and of an orange van parked on the property, according to documents filed in Woodward

District Court Monday.
The other items that were seized include 10 dried marijuana plants, several partially smoked marijuana
cigarettes, and various drug paraphernalia from a triple beam scale to plastic tubing to smoking pipes.
''In a lot of places this would be considered a pretty good sized grow operation," Brandenburg said,
noting that it was "a good bust for us." ''If any of it (marijuana) gets in the hands of children or anybody else,
it's not a good deal," he said. "It is still a gateway drug." As of Monday no arrest had been made and no
charges had been filed in the case. However, Brandenburg remained hopeful that he will "get some good
prosecution out of it" and noted that OBN is seeking an arrest warrant for the property owner.
Sharon is about 130 miles northwest of Oklahoma City.
